A total Marine Reserve and Nature Reserve - and pending World Heritage Site - the 11 million year old Islands’ volcanic origins provide a myriad of spectacular drop offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels.
Above and below water, the Islands are abundantly populated with unique and incredibly varied plant, animal and fish life.
Laying claim to an astounding Roman history and the remarkable Giannutri Island thoroughly deserve their protected status.
CALA DEI SANTI CAVE
The first cove you meet when rounding Punta Avoltore towards Porto Ercole is Cala dei Santi, the oldest site of the headland. In the cave bearing the same name several items have been found verifying the human presence in far off times. According to the locals the name given to the cave is also due to the odd shapes of the stalactites and the stalagmites reminding them of the saints. On this same coastal stretch there is the Grotta Azzurra.
